QR codes vs short links: when to use which
QR codes and short links solve different problems. Use this guide to pick the right format for print, digital, events, and packaging — with a decision table.
QR codes and short links both point to a URL. Beyond that, they are different tools for different contexts. One requires a camera; the other requires the ability to type or tap. Knowing which to use — and when to use both together — saves you from either frustrating your audience or missing analytics you could have captured.
What each format actually is
A short link is a URL — typically 20–30 characters — that redirects to a longer destination. People click it in a browser, tap it on a phone, or type it into an address bar. The URL itself is readable text that communicates something about the destination when written well.
A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that encodes a URL (or other data). People scan it with a smartphone camera. The camera opens the URL automatically. The QR code is a visual artifact — it is not readable text, and its appearance communicates nothing about the destination.
Both formats serve the same underlying job: get someone from a surface (a piece of paper, a screen, a sign) to a URL. The right choice depends on the surface, the audience, and the context.
The core tradeoff
Short links require intentional action — the viewer must read the URL, remember it (even briefly), navigate to their browser, and type or paste it. That is friction. For clicks from a digital surface (email, social media, website), that friction is near-zero because the link is tappable. For traffic from a physical surface (print, packaging, signage), the friction is real.
QR codes require camera access — the viewer must take out their phone, open the camera, aim it at the code, hold it steady, and wait for the preview link to appear before tapping. For most smartphone users, this has become habitual enough that the friction is low. But it requires a physical object within scanning distance and lighting conditions that the camera can handle.
Neither is universally better. Both have contexts where they are clearly the right choice.

When short links win
Digital-first surfaces. Anywhere a link is tapped rather than manually entered, a short link is correct. Email, social media, SMS, push notifications, in-app messages — on all of these, the link is live and tappable. QR codes add zero value in tappable contexts.
Audio and broadcast. When you mention a URL on a podcast, in a radio ad, or in a TV commercial, the viewer cannot pause and scan. The URL must be short, memorable, and typeable. A custom slug like 1url.at/guide is far more effective than a QR code the audience cannot even see.
When you need the URL to communicate something. A well-chosen slug is self-describing: 1url.at/spring-sale signals a promotion; 1url.at/support signals a help destination. Analytics depth. Short links route through a redirect server, which can record analytics on every click — country, device, timestamp — without any client-side code running on the destination page. A plain QR code (one not backed by a redirect) sends the scan directly to the destination with no analytics data captured. To get analytics from a QR code scan, you need the QR code to encode a tracked URL — either a UTM-tagged URL or a short link.
Making short links more memorable

When QR codes win
Physical surfaces. Print advertising, product packaging, restaurant menus, conference materials, event signage, and retail displays are the natural home for QR codes. Scanning is faster than typing for a phone-native audience, and the visual size of a QR code is practical on print materials where a URL would need to be printed large enough to read.
When typing is genuinely inconvenient. In contexts where a viewer's hands are occupied, the lighting is poor for reading text, or the distance from the surface makes small text unreadable, a large QR code is more accessible than a small URL.
High-volume physical distribution. A product shipped to thousands of customers with a QR code printed on the box gives you a trackable entry point to a post-purchase flow. A short link works too, but QR codes have become the expected affordance for this use case.
When your audience is already in camera mode. At events, in museums, in retail — environments where people already have their phones out — QR codes have very low friction because the user is already primed for that interaction.
The best of both: combining QR codes with short links
The most flexible approach for physical materials is to use both: print a QR code and the short link it encodes side by side. This covers:
- Scan-first users who aim their camera and tap
- Type-first users who prefer to enter the URL manually
- Screen-reader users and accessibility contexts where the text URL is essential
- Archival and reference contexts where the URL remains readable if the QR code fades or degrades

Never encode a raw URL directly in a QR code
If you print a QR code that encodes https://example.com/products/special-offer?campaign=summer-2026, you have locked yourself in. If the destination page moves, the offer ends, or you need to update the URL, you cannot — the QR code is already printed. You would need to reprint everything.
A short link is updateable. Print a QR code that encodes 1url.at/r/summer-offer, and if the destination changes, you update the short link's destination. The printed QR code stays valid. This is the most important operational advantage of using a short link as the QR code's payload.
The same logic applies to analytics. A QR code encoding a raw URL captures no analytics from the shortener. A QR code encoding a short link gives you click analytics — country, device, day — every time a scan happens. The analytics dashboard shows this data in real time.
QR code technical considerations
If you are generating QR codes yourself rather than using a tool that handles it, a few technical points matter.
Error correction level. QR codes have four error correction levels: L (7%), M (15%), Q (25%), H (30%). Higher levels allow the code to scan successfully even if part of it is obscured or damaged — useful for printed materials that may get folded or partially covered. Use Q or H for print; L or M is acceptable for purely digital display.
Quiet zone. The white margin around a QR code — the quiet zone — must be present for scanners to reliably detect the code boundary. A minimum of four module widths on each side is the specification. Cutting a QR code close to its border is the most common cause of scan failures.
Minimum print size. A QR code should be printed at no smaller than 2 × 2 cm (approximately 0.8 × 0.8 inches) for reliable scanning. At smaller sizes, scanner success rates drop significantly, especially in lower light.
Color contrast. QR codes require strong contrast between the dark modules and the light background. Black on white is the baseline. Colored QR codes (dark blue on light yellow, for example) work if contrast is sufficient, but test before printing at scale.
